A postdoctoral fellow is an individual holding a doctoral degree who is engaged in a temporary period of mentored research and/or scholarly training for the purpose of acquiring the professional skills needed to pursue the career path of his or her choosing. A postdoctoral fellow plays an active role in seeking career and research advice, both from the faculty supervisor and from other faculty members as appropriate. A postdoctoral fellow performs the research required by the faculty supervisor to a high standard and in accordance with all institutional and federal regulations. A postdoctoral fellow seeks out and is receptive to performance feedback. A postdoctoral fellow works in a collegial and cooperative manner with the faculty supervisor and other coworkers. A postdoc is a part of a creative, productive, energetic, and collaborative team of investigators with diverse backgrounds that span engineering, medicine, biology, and chemistry. A postdoc contributes experimentally and intellectually, and participates in many discussions and presentations of data. A postdoc works with senior scientists and policy experts on critical national and international policy issues related to science, engineering, and technology.

A postdoctoral fellowship requires a PhD in science and some previous experience in the relevant field. A postdoc should be skilled in using the computer to solve problems. A postdoc should be willing to perform on-call duties. Strong verbal and written communication skills are also required.
